Useless Boy Detectives turns Neil Gaiman’s ghostly duo into “Hardy Boys on acid”

For these eagerly anticipating the second season of Netflix’s stellar adaption of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman graphic novels, Useless Boy Detectives—the streaming plaform’s new supernatural horror detective collection—is a welcome return to that bizarre magical world. Co-showrunner Steve Yockey (Supernatural), who created the collection, aptly describes it as “the Hardy Boys on acid.” You’ve got obtained vengeful witches, demons, psychic mediums, cursed masks, foul-mouthed parasitic sprites, speaking cats—and, in fact, the titular ghostly detectives, intent on spending their afterlife cracking all method of mysterious paranormal instances.

Sandman followers first encountered the Useless Boys within the “Seasons of Mist” storyline, by which the ghost Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland meet for the primary time in 1990. Edwin had been murdered at his boarding college in 1916 and spent many years in Hell. When Lucifer deserted his area, Hell was emptied, and Edwin was among the many souls who returned to that boarding college. Charles was a dwelling pupil whom Edwin tried to guard. Charles in the end died and selected to affix Edwin in his afterlife adventures. The characters reappeared within the Youngsters’s Campaign crossover collection, by which they determined to develop into detectives.
