Tesla ordered to pay $137M to Black former worker subjected to racist workplace

Tesla owes Owen Diaz $137 million after a jury discovered that the Black former employee was subjected to racial abuse that the electrical car firm insufficiently addressed throughout his tenure.

Diaz, an elevator operator on the firm’s Fremont manufacturing facility for 9 months from 2015 to 2016, had been referred to as racial epithets by coworkers, was instructed to “return to Africa,” and noticed racist graffiti within the loos. The trial lasted slightly over per week, and the jury discovered that Tesla had not taken affordable steps to stop racial harassment.
