Italian authorities are investigating deepfake bots on Telegram

The Italian Information Safety Authority has began an investigation into the widespread use of bots that generate pretend nude photographs on messaging app Telegram. The information follows an investigation by safety agency Sensity, which discovered that as of July 2020 greater than 100,000 faked photographs had been generated and shared in public Telegram channels.

The bots can generate pretend nudes which have watermarks or that present solely partial nudity, and customers pay to “reveal” the entire picture. Customers may submit a photograph of a girl to the bot and obtain a model of the picture again with clothes “eliminated” and no indication that the picture had been altered.
