Google employed union-busting consultants to persuade staff “unions suck”

For years, Google has tried to kill employee-led unionization efforts underneath an initiative codenamed “Venture Vivian.” Within the phrases of 1 senior supervisor, Venture Vivian existed “to interact staff extra positively and persuade them that unions suck.”

Venture Vivian seems to be Google’s response to a surge in employee activism that started in 2018, when 1000’s of staff walked out in protest of the corporate’s response to sexual harassment complaints. Months later, staff started pushing for improved working circumstances for Google contractors and an finish to contracts with US authorities businesses concerned in deportations and household separations. Two staff who helped set up the 2018 walkout later left the corporate, saying they had been going through retaliation.

Finally, 5 staff had been fired, and two had been disciplined. They filed a grievance with the Nationwide Labor Relations Board alleging that Google interfered with their law-protected rights to arrange on the office. The NLRB agreed and filed a grievance towards Google in December 2020. Google refused to settle, and the matter went to the NLRB’s administrative court docket.
