Apple and Google cave to Putin’s censors, block Navalny app as election begins

Apple and Google gave a lift to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ruling celebration by eradicating a strategic voting app developed by activists who help the jailed opposition chief Alexei Navalny. The app, known as “Navalny,” was kicked off the cellular app shops forward of this weekend’s legislative election as Apple and Google caved to strain from the Russian authorities.

“Eradicating the Navalny app from shops is a shameful act of political censorship. Russia’s authoritarian authorities and propaganda can be thrilled,” Ivan Zhdanov, who’s director of the Navalny-founded Anti-Corruption Basis and a politician within the Russia of the Future opposition celebration, wrote on Twitter. Whereas candidates related to Navalny are banned from the election, the Navalny app was designed to assist voters coalesce round opposition candidates who’re on the poll.
